Urban Teachers Resident (for Aspiring Teachers)
Urban Teachers is a four-year teacher training and certification program.
We prepare, certify, and support new educators to be highly effective so they can provide high-quality education for children by offering a master’s degree, coaching, mentoring, and job placement. Teachers who finish our program are committed to excellence, equity, and inclusivity, and have the skills and confidence to build lasting, fulfilling careers.
Year One
Like any other life-changing profession, we believe teachers require intensive training to excel. And that’s why our first year is structured as a residency with extensive one-on-one coaching. You’ll work alongside a seasoned classroom teacher during the day, receive coaching support from our highly-trained clinical faculty, then take practice-based masters level courses after school. During the first year of our program, you’ll also receive a $20,000 stipend to help pay for your living expenses.
Year Two
Welcome to your own classroom. Most likely you’ll become a teacher of record in the same school* where you worked last year and start earning a salary. A Johns Hopkins School of Education faculty member will be your coach, helping you through classroom challenges. Tuition at JHU is $20,000/year, but you won’t begin paying on loans associated with this expense until year four of our program.
Year Three
You’ve finished your coursework, but the coaching continues. As you return to the classroom, your coach helps you constantly improve your teaching practice. You’ll receive your certification this year in your area of study and Special Education. Participants based in Dallas / Fort Worth also receive certification in English as a Second Language.
Year Four
You’ve got this. By now, you’re becoming a change agent in your school, working to improve student outcomes and contributing fresh ideas and energy to the school community. But we’re still here for you. Johns Hopkins faculty continue to provide support and guidance upon request.
