Today on the Dr. Phil Show I saw what had to be the worst example of how we are killing our children. There was a mother, her mother and a 3 year old child and all three were for lack of trying to sugar coat this, OBESE. I sat and listened to the mother and grandmother trying to justify why this three year old child was so overweight. The child herself said she couldn't play like other kids play because she was tired and she was too big. For those that did not see the show, they had a physician who had done some laboratory studies on this child and it was found that she was already in a pre-diabetic state. He predicted unless they drastically changed this child's diet that she would be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes within months. The sad thing is it is going to be a drastic shock to this child who had been accustomed to stuffing her face with everything except carrot and celery sticks. Type 2 diabetes is what we are use to hearing our adult parents and grandparents having...not a three year old child. It wasn't that her body isn't making insulin...it is because of all the carbohydrates that have been introduced into her body on a daily basis that her body no longer is able to use the insulin properly.
Seeing this program reminded me of how our society has become the society of doing things the easy way. It is easy to give a child food, drop into a fast food establishment to grab a meal instead of taking time to prepare nutritious meals for the family. Every young child I know has heard of the Happy Meal and would much prefer that to a meal of broiled fish, steamed veggies, and fruit for dessert. Have you ever wondered why they call it the happy meal?
Since we are in the mode of A TIME FOR CHANGE...I think it is past time for some of that change to be how we feed our family and get back to basics of preparing healthy meals at home. Otherwise...we will continue to raise the next generation of obese adults and the cycle will continue. As we are about to enter into the season of the holidays...let's be mindful of why we have been blessed with the fruits of the earth...to provide nourishment for our bodies.
