The National Black Marathoners' Association has selected the 31st Annual Cowtown Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, Adults 5K, and Kids 5K for its 2009 Event. The Cowtown (www.cowtownmarathon.org/), located in Fort Worth, Texas, is one of the largest events in the Southwest and features a full pre-race expo. Scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2009, The Cowtown was selected because the multi-race event provides a venue for every walker and runner.
"We are very excited about running this historic course and having a great, fun-filled weekend,” said Tony Reed, NBMA's Executive Director. “They offer a variety of events and distances for our runners and walkers. This was my first marathon in 1982, and I've run it seventeen previous times. Hopefully, it will be my 100th marathon. We especially like that the races start and finish near the home of the Jubilee Theatre. This is Fort Worth's predominately Black playhouse. It was also founded in 1982."
Jim Gilliland, Race Director of The Cowtown, said, “We, at The Cowtown, welcome the NBMA members and the diversity they will bring to the event. For 30 years, runners have been coming to Fort Worth to enjoy The Cowtown experience and its western-flavored hospitality. We hope lots of NBMA folks will do so too.”
The National Black Marathoners' Association (NBMA) is a not-for-profit organization. It is open to everyone, regardless of athletic ability or previous marathon experience. Its objectives are to
- Encourage Black Americans and others to pursue a healthy life-style through long distance running and walking.
- Serve as a vehicle for Black American distance runners across the nation to en masse at a single marathon.
