African Americans are TOO Fat! (2515 hits)

In 2004, the death rate for African Americans was higher than Whites for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and homicide.

So how do African Americans combat these disease?

SOLUTION: There's a new movement to help African Americans lose weight, and its called the 50 Million Pound Challenge. Led by Dr. Ian Smith, an author and diet expert, the initiative encourages and challenges overweight African Americans to take action.

According to Dr. Smith, obesity is the number one health crisis that African-Americans are dealing with. Obesity leads to heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more.

The 50 Million Pound Challenge is a way for Blacks all around the country to unite, and shed those pounds together. "It’s about all of us coming together and looking out for each other as we work to take more control of our lives. It’s about taking the time to reach out and lock hands as we join forces to fight the very real risk that being overweight poses to ourselves, our families, and our community," he says.

Smith is not by himself in leading this revolutionary movement. Several celebrities, including Patti Labelle, Steve Harvey Yolanda Adams, Omarion and Biz Markie, have joined him for support. State Farm Insurance has even stepped up to the plate as the title sponsor for the challenge.

The nationwide campaign will last for two years, and will kick off on April 7, 2007 on a 14-city tour as a part of the first phase. Interested ones can visit http://www.50MillionPounds.com to register free, and take advantage of the Weight Tracker - an interactive tool to monitor one's progress.

Going to all these websites will not help black women lose weight. It is having support. I lost 46lbs by myself and it was difficult because my family was not supportive but I still kept at it by being more active. I wore a stepper and kept to at least 10,000 steps every other day. I joined a health club and the Caucasians and Hispanics were so supportive unlike my black sisters. I still remeber when I worked in the office prior to working from home and the black women would say awful things when I couldn't eat the foods they were eating. There would be outbursts such as "I ain't starving myself for nobody" I had my reasons for not drinking sodas anymore. Hell, I had difficulty swallowing and diagnosed with GERD so I was informed by my doctor that I had to make some changes to my diet. Otherwise, I would continue to hurt real reall bad. Therefore, I gradually gave up those things in which I liked so much just to live a much better life. Try telling that to sista's. Also, I still remeber how I would be the only one walking during my lunch and breaks. Another thing, whenever I wanted to participate in 5k walks I could never get them to get out there with me. I've tried every year to get them to get out for the Susan G. Komen Race. Never, never, never, is their attitude. So, I've had to say forget them and start participating with whites and hispanics in the gym and I'm the only sista on Kicball Team in my neighborhood. It's so lonely trying to lose weight.... and being a black woman.
