Understated, subtle attire? Don’t count on it this year, the experts say

Bright patterns, ruffles and leggings will be the rage this fall, says fashionista and owner of Vivian B in NoDa, Kimberly Wilkinson.
Fall fashions are already pouring into the trendy boutique on North Davidson Street, and Wilkinson says little girls and college-age women are going to be sporting ruffles this season in skirts, on dresses and on shirts.
“Patterns are going to be prevalent; the jewel tones are going to continue to be hot; and lace and ruffles are going to make an appearance,” she says – especially when it comes to leggings. “I’m seeing leggings with big patterns, like roses or chains. Strong, bold patterns on the legs are going to be popular and I’m going to make sure I have those.”
Skinny jeans, a mainstay among today’s fashion choices, aren’t going anywhere this fall and Wilkinson says that’s because these pants look good with any shoe – from flats to boots to sneakers.
Fashiontrendseeker.com says to expect edgier teen fashions this fall and winter. Those items for girls and young women include bright animal print, leather and peplum styles (a shape-defining style that flares at the hip and is flattering to most body types).
When school starts in North Carolina, it’s generally hot and humid, which is why Bermuda shorts are still an option. The longer shorts are appropriate for school dress codes and keep girls cool in the steamy days of August and September.
A lot of grade-school-aged children wear uniforms to school, but that doesn’t mean girls and boys have to give up showing off their individuality.
Yahoo! Shine says, “For students who have to wear school uniforms, flowered headbands are a hit, thanks to shows like ‘Gossip Girl.’ Floral prints and tribal themes are also rumored to be hot this season.”
And young men have options, too – more than T-shirts and Jordans.
