Healthy Eating for Maximum Weight Loss After Bariatric Surgery (1421 hits)

Bariatric (weight loss) surgery refers to numerous procedures that involve changes to the stomach and the small intestine for the purpose of promoting weight loss among individuals who are severely overweight. Since the overall capacity of the stomach is reduced after this surgery, people tend to consume fewer calories while feeling fuller, which ultimately results in dramatic reductions in body weight. Since food intake is permanently restricted after bariatric surgery, it's important to eat a certain way, every day to ensure that all nutritional needs are met. Here are five healthy eating strategies that increase the likelihood of long-term success after bariatric surgery.

Consume Ample Amounts of Lean Protein

Protein is the most important nutrient to consume after bariatric surgery, as it is critical for maximizing fat burning and preventing muscle wasting. Lean muscle is necessary for preserving the metabolic rate during weight loss and it's absolutely crucial for long-term weight management and general good health (click here to learn why). To effectively maintain muscle following surgery, it's best to consume at least 60-80 grams of protein in small portions spread out evenly over the course of the day. The best food sources of protein include fish, poultry, lean meats, eggs, low-fat dairy products, whole soy products, and dietary supplements (egg white protein and whey protein isolate).
