Police are scratching their heads trying to work out who donated a human skull to a thrift store in Austin, Texas.
Homicide Detective Derek Israel said Wednesday that foul play is not suspected and that he just wants to know how the adult skull came to be left at the Goodwill store.
Goodwill store staff discovered the skull while sifting through donations on July 16.
A spokeswoman says it could have been gifted up to a week prior to its discovery.
NBC Washington reports the skull is definitely from an adult.
Their s*x, age, and cause of death have yet to be determined, reports KVUE.
No other details about it have been released.
The skull may have been part of a private collection.
'We think it was probably something that belonged to the person who donated it, to a relative of the person who donated it and it was part of a collection or an anatomical model or something like that.'
Israel told KVUE. 'It could have been something that was kept by someone who was a student of anthropology, a student of medicine, dentistry...any of those things.'
Goodwill spokesperson Traci Berry said it's not uncommon for any of the Austin charity's 31 stores to receive donations that could be considered unusual.
'We have gotten prosthetic limbs. We have gotten Rolex watches. We have gotten Krugerrands. Our donations run the gamut,' she said.
This is at least the fourth skull to be donated to the international nonprofit this summer.
Three were donated in July to a Goodwill store in Bellevue, Washington.
