HOUSTON – A local woman has a warning for social media users after she said she was targeted by a scam artist with a wild story.
Jennifer Murphy says she is determined to make sure it doesn't happen to someone else.
It all started after Murphy, a mother of three, was going through a very tough time financially. Her way of dealing with things was to vent on Facebook.
She was getting evicted from her Meyerland home, which she posted on Facebook. All of a sudden she got a message from someone she thought was Tyler Perry, the actor and director who specializes in gospel genre.
In the message, the person offered her a place to live in Atlanta. She said she couldn't relocate. Then they offered her $10,000 and all she had to do was come up with $2,000 of her own money.
"He asked can you pawn on something or sell something. Can you get it somehow?" she said.
She added that it did not stop there.
"After the Facebook page was deleted he proceeded to text me on my cell phone. And that went on and on and on. It's like he got desperate to get the $2,000," she said.
She knew the person was trying to scam her.
The family says all they were asking for were prayers. Now they just want everyone to know it was a scam, so don't fall for it.
As for the family, they don't know where they will be moving to live.
