HOW WHIEEH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HONORS PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM RECIPIENT, UPDATES ON GRANTS, ETC. (1241 hits)

A Note From our Executive Director

Over the coming weeks, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (Initiative) will be working to facilitate the transition to the next Administration. As many of you know, the Executive Order authorizing the work of the Initiative has been renewed under every Administration since 1990. Our goal is to ensure that the incoming Administration understands the importance of the Initiative's work, including that of our Bright Spot and Commitment partners.

Our top priority is to continue to ensure that Hispanic students, parents and educators feel secure in their schools, communities and country. In that spirit, we ask you to remain steadfast in protecting the civil rights and safety of our students and families. We wanted to remind you of the various resources available (see below) to ensure all students have access to quality and safe educational opportunities that prepares them for a successful future.

Fulfilling America’s Future: Latinas in the U.S. Summit

Last year the Initiative published a report, Fulfilling Americas Future: Latinas in the U.S., to highlight the condition of Hispanic girls and women in this country and their participation in areas such as: education, health, labor, housing and politics. Recently, the Initiative held the Latinas in the U.S. summit at the White House to further the asset-based narrative on Latinas and raised awareness on the investments needed in support of advancing the educational, workforce, and leadership opportunities for Latinas. The event was hosted by stand-up comedian, actress, writer and producer Cristela Alonzo and featured diverse panels. See the entire list of speaker biographies.

The entire event can be watched here along with a Watch Party Toolkit that was created to help facilitate a discussion on the topic areas covered throughout the summit. Access photos from the summit here.

Be sure to use our hashtag #YoSoyLatina to continue the conversation.

School Improvement Grants Update

The Department recently announced more than $427 million in School Improvement Grants (SIG) to help turn around persistently lowest-achieving schools in nearly every state and U.S. territory. Since 2009, the SIG program has invested over $7 billion in transforming roughly 1,800 schools. While this is the last year the agency will award funds under the current program, the Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) continues this work, requiring that states identify and support lowest-performing schools with set-aside funds under Title I.
