SEVEN THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT...PINEAPPLES IN HAWAII (3144 hits)

The island of Oahu has a long history with the pineapple fruit. Many know the story of James Dole, who at 22 years of age, moved to Honolulu from Massachusetts in 1899 and purchased 64 acres of land in the central plains of Oahu. After trying several experimental crops, he settled on pineapple. This was the beginning of the pineapple empire.

THE MODERN HONOLULU, serves a fresh, chilled pineapple at the hotel’s restaurants, and it’s often passed to pool guests midday as a complementary refreshment. The golden fruit is dusted with Li Hing Mui, a unique Hawaiian “treat” made from sweet & sour plum powder.

Guests can also order a gorgeous, cut pineapple from room service that arrives with pineapple juice and cookies.

1. Pineapples thrive at elevations generally halfway between sea level and the mountains of Hawaii. Thus, on Oahu, Maui and Lanai, you’ll find most pineapple producers tending fields at between 1,200 and 3,500 feet elevation, where cooler nights and higher clay composition in the soil bode well for the fruit crop.

2. Every single pineapple grown at Dole’s North Shore plantation is hand-planted. This is done by cleaving the green, leafy top of a pineapple off the fruit and planting it right-side-up in the ground. Each worker at the Dole Plantation can plant nearly 10,000 pineapple crowns each day

3. It takes 18-20 months for a pineapple plant's first pineapple to be ready for harvesting. The second pineapple produced by each plant will only take 15 months.

4. In the era of biodynamic farming and crop diversification, Dole Plantation acreage has seen a rise in alternate crops being planted. Coffee, cacao beans, tropical flowers and tomatoes have all been sown in the last decade at Dole’s Wahiawa location.

5. James Drummond Dole—founder and president of Hawaiian Pineapple Company in 1901—arrived in Hawaii to launch his pineapple empire in 1899.

6. Dole’s acquisition of the island of Lanai (in 1922 for $1.1 million) made Hawaii the epicenter of pineapple production and distribution around the globe. The end result? Restaurants the world over still call a pizza with pineapple on it a “Hawaiian pizza” when, in fact, neither pineapple nor pizza have any deep cultural significance to Hawaiian people.

7. The Dole Plantation on Oahu’s North Shore houses the world’s largest maze. It spans more than three acres and includes 2.5 miles of paths lined with 14,000 pineapple plants. The fastest finishers win a prize and are recorded into the history books at Dole Plantation. (Hint: There’s an aerial view of the maze on their website. Study up!)
