HOW TO REGISTER AND ATTEND THE FEDERAL COMMISSION ON SCHOOL SAFETY PUBLIC LISTENING SESSION! (2674 hits)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM Department of Education!

The Federal Commission on School Safety will hold its first listening session on Wednesday, June 6 at the U.S. Department of Education’s Lyndon Baines Johnson Headquarters Building (U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, S.W., Washington, DC 20202). Members of the public will have an opportunity to share with representatives of the Commission their views on how schools, school districts, institutions of higher education, and local and state government agencies can improve school safety.

The open public forum will be divided into two sessions – a morning session (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) and an afternoon session (1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.). The Listening Session will focus on gathering information from stakeholders, experts and the public on how schools, districts, institutions of higher education and other local and state government agencies can improve school safety.

Those who would like to sign up for a five minute time slot to speak at the session, as well as those who would like to observe, should register here (https://www.cvent.com/events/federal-commission-on-school-safety-meeting-listening-session/registration-d038dd0af885412f8a1881380631f058.aspx?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=&fqp=true). Individuals who would like to present comments and/or observe the listening session must register (https://www.cvent.com/events/federal-commission-on-school-safety-meeting-listening-session/registration-d038dd0af885412f8a1881380631f058.aspx?fqp=true&utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=). Speaking slots of up to five minutes will be based during the two blocks of time – the morning session (9:30 AM-11 AM and 11:15 AM-12:30 PM) and the afternoon session (1:30 PM-2:45 PM and 3 PM-4:30 PM).

We will attempt to accommodate each speaker’s preference, but, if unable to do so, we will make the determination on a first-come, first-served basis. At least 24 hours prior to the event, the Department will send an email notification to the registrant of the session group in which he or she is scheduled to speak and the required time of arrival.

If we receive more speaker requests than we are able to accommodate, the Department reserves the right to rescind the registration of an entity or individual that is affiliated with an entity or individual that is already scheduled to present comments and to select among speaker requests to ensure that a broad range of entities and individuals are allowed to present.

The Commission will accept walk-in registrations for speaking and/or observing on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at 9:45 AM for the morning session and 1:45 PM for the afternoon session, until capacity is reached.

The Department will publicize the listening session through a media advisory (see below), as well as a Federal Register notice (to be published on June 4). It will also live-stream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=&v=LOHJAk9Indw) the session and, within a few days, post a transcript of the session on the Department’s web site.

The Commission will hold a total of four listening sessions. The other three sessions will be held in other regions of the country, with dates and locations to be determined.
