Deep Breathing – The Best Health Prevention (97 hits)

By Ayo Handy Kendi, CTBF/CSM

As the Nation is listening to the Congressional debates about the over-haul of the health care system, President Obama, often mentions the concept of “prevention” as the real savings to quality life and wellness without the high costs of illness. I agree, seeing daily the consequences of poor health prevention as a Wholistic Practitioner, Breathologist, a Certified Transformational Breath Facilitator (CTBF) and Stress Manager thus, I advocate deep breathing as the best prevention technique.

The ancient awareness of breathwork is being resurrected with more information, now being shared on main stream news and media. Recently, I was blessed to speak about “the power of the breath” on the Steve Harvey’s Morning Show, and since 1996, I have made appearances to millions on radio, t.v. and in print.

To spread this good news further, my wholistic health practice, PositivEnergyWorks will host a national conference on “The Power of the Breath” on Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Westminster Church, 400 ”I “Street, S.W., (Waterfront Metro). Featured will be master “breath” practitioners along with yoga, chi gong, and other breathwork concepts.

What’s so important about the breath? Breath is life! We all say that we know how to breathe because we are living! But medical research documents that 90% of all Americans are not living to the fullest, by breathing inefficiently which puts their health at great risk.

We take our breath for granted and only realize its importance when we find ourselves unable to breathe. Taking in approximately 20,000 breaths a day, on average 15-18 times a minute, breathing is an involuntary function of the Limbric portion of our brain and is the primary function of the respiratory system, where we CAN control it. Being aware of our breath enables us to maximize each breath that we take. Deep breathing expands the belly as we inhale, expanding the lungs to the fullest capacity to bring in the maximum amount of oxygen to optimally nourish our blood flow to support all of the cells in the body. Exhaling by constricting the belly, releases more carbon dioxide, the gas that we don’t need. The bottom line -- more oxygen and better detoxification means enhanced cellular and body function processes.

Breath is also the link to our higher, spiritual nature. Many sacred texts indicate that The Almighty breathed into humankind and man became a living being. Today, most conscious awareness practices use breath as the foundation while others use breath to heal the emotional mind, increase concentration, reduce stress and depression.

Our breath is right under our noses, free and accessible to us all. The breath is the easiest thing that we can change for the greatest impact on Spirit, Mind and Body perhaps making it the best alternative, prevention technique that we have.
