Father's Day a priority for Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade (2356 hits)

By Jeff Zillgitt, USA TODAY

Sunday will be the second consecutive Father's Day Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade will spend with sole custody of his two sons, Zaire, 10, and Zion 5.

In March, 2011, a Cook County, Ill., judge awarded Wade custody and during last season's playoffs, Wade told USA TODAY Sports, "I love the game of basketball, and I respect the game of basketball for what it has done for me and my family. But I understand what's important, and my boys are the most important thing to me."

On Sept. 4, Wade's book, A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger than Basketball, will be released by Harper Collins.

"Obviously anyone who's a father, it's one of the most special things in life, and one of the most purest relationships and purest things that you have in life," Wade said Saturday. "You know, I enjoy being one of the guys with my boys, but I also enjoy being a leader and being able to lead them, and help mold the way that they think, and hopefully some of the things that they're going to do."

Wade just finished writing the book.

"It speaks on fatherhood, speaks on the challenges. It also speaks on my childhood, kind of what I dealt with growing up, as well," Wade said. "I wanted to show some of my personal experiences with people who have dealt with some of the same things I've dealt with in life, or people that might one day deal with the same sort of things. Fatherhood is a culture thing, and it's something that everyone can share in. I thought I would share my experiences and hopefully help others."
