“Today, for 47 million women, the Affordable Care Act is opening new doors to quality, affordable, and accessible preventive care. No longer will insurance companies be able to charge co-pays for a host of preventive services, including HIV screening, well-woman visits, gestational diabetes testing, contraception, and domestic violence counseling. This is one of the many provisions of the Affordable Care Act that makes it easier for women and their doctors – and not insurance companies – to make health care decisions.
“Preventive care helps us keep costs down by helping Americans stay healthy and catch health problems earlier. That’s why the Affordable Care Act places a particular focus on making preventive care services easier to access and enables many of them to be obtained with no out-of-pocket cost to the patient. Those covered under Medicare can now receive a range of free preventive services, including mammograms and colonoscopies, and over 32 million Medicare beneficiaries took advantage of these free services last year.
