President Biden Announces $770 One-Time Payment for L.A. Wildfire Victims To Help With Essentials

President Joe Biden has stepped in to support victims of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

On Monday, he announced that people impacted by the fires will get a one-time $770 payment to help with essential purchases like water, baby formula, and medicine.

“So far, nearly 6,000 survivors have registered, and $5.1 million has already been distributed,” Biden said. “We aren’t waiting until the fires are over to help—people need aid now.”

The wildfires have destroyed over 12,300 structures, burned through 40,000 acres, and claimed 24 lives. With evacuation orders affecting over 90,000 residents, another 89,000 people remain under warnings to leave. Entire communities have been wiped out.

Biden also emphasized the need for long-term financial support:

“It’s going to take tens of billions of dollars to rebuild L.A. Congress needs to step up with funding.”

Additionally, Biden confirmed that the federal government will cover 100% of disaster response costs for the next six months.

Tyler Pery is calling out home insurance companies for canceling policies for thousands of residents impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.

Like many social media users, Tyler Perry is flabbergasted by the wildfires blazing through the Los Angeles area. This weekend, the film producer opened up about some of the things he’s witnessed since the fires started on Jan. 7.

“Watching a daughter use a garden hose to try and protect her 90-year-old parents’ home because their insurance was canceled was just gut-wrenching to me,” Perry wrote on Instagram.

Before the Palisades and Eaton fires burned over 30,000 acres of land, thousands of Los Angeles residents were reportedly dropped from their home insurance companies as these companies chose to cancel certain policies. Recently, the state’s largest home insurer, State Farm General, decided not to renew 30,000 homeowner policies when they expired. This decision follows a growing trend in the California home insurance landscape, where insurers have either reduced or canceled their coverage in the state due to the frequency of wildfires and the high costs of doing business there.

California’s insurance commissioner issued a one-year moratorium on policy nonrenewals and cancellations in areas affected by devastating wildfires in and around Los Angeles.

“I am using my moratorium powers to prevent insurance companies from canceling or non-renewing policies in wildfire-impacted areas, so people don’t face the added stress of finding new insurance during this horrific event,” the state’s Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara said in a statement Thursday.

“I am working on all fronts to make sure wildfire victims get the benefits they are entitled to, and they get it as soon as possible.”

The mandate prevents insurers from cancelling or refusing to renew policies for properties located in any ZIP code within or adjacent to the fire perimeter.

The California Department of Insurance said it may issue a supplemental bulletin for additional ZIP codes determined to be impacted by the state of emergency for Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE

Mandatory One Year Moratorium on Non-Renewals

Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, while serving as state senator, authored Senate Bill 824 (2018). This important consumer protection law requires a mandatory one-year moratorium on insurance companies canceling or non-renewing residential insurance policies in certain areas within or adjacent to a fire perimeter after a declared state of emergency is issued by the Governor.

“Losing your insurance should be the last thing on someone’s mind after surviving a devastating fire,” said Commissioner Lara. “This law gives millions of Californians breathing room and hits the pause button on insurance non-renewals while people recover.”

How The Moratorium Works

Following a Governor declaration of a state of emergency, the Department of Insurance partners with CAL-FIRE and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to identify wildfire perimeters and adjacent ZIP codes within the mandatory moratorium areas. The protection from cancellation or non-renewal lasts for one year from the date of the Governor’s emergency declaration.

This one-year protection applies to all residential policyholders within the affected areas who suffer less than a total loss, including those who suffer no loss. Those who suffer a total loss have additional protections under the law.

Find Out If You Are Protected

Commissioner Lara has implemented the new law following wildfires in 2019, 2020, and 2021. If you live near one of these fires, find the fire name in the list below and click the link to open the Commissioner’s Bulletin for a list of included ZIP codes. If you live in one of those ZIP codes, your insurance company cannot issue a cancellation or non-renewal for wildfire risk for one year from the date of the Governor’s emergency declaration associated with the nearby fire. Below is a list of fires for which Bulletins have been issued since the passage of this new law as well as the Pre-Bulletin Notices for the 2021 fires. The Department continues to coordinate with CalFire and CalOES to identify the various fire and fire perimeters that are subject to the one-year moratorium for the 2021 fires.

If your ZIP code is included in the moratorium and you received a notice of cancellation or non-renewal for wildfire risk, you should contact your insurance company to seek a reinstatement of the policy. If your insurance company refuses, you are encouraged to contact us and file a Request for Assistance: https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/...
