Description


The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences [SLAS] at Pratt comprises five departments and the Writing and Tutorial Center. The five academic departments-History of Art and Design, Humanities and Media Studies, Social Sciences and Cultural Studies, Mathematics and Science, and Writing-house a number of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as undergraduate minors and graduate certificate programs. These departments are also responsible for the General Education program in which all Pratt undergraduate students take classes across a range of disciplines.

The Assistant to the Dean is responsible for the School's administrative, operational, and communications-based initiatives as directed by the SLAS Dean. Additionally, the Assistant to the Dean serves as the primary point of contact for the Dean in the day-to-day functioning of the School, coordinating activities across departments, individuals, offices, and schools within the institute and with external parties.

Examples of Duties


  • Responsible for the management of the Dean's appointments and meetings, coordinating the Dean's schedule, and assisting the Dean with coordinating and tracking School activities.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day administrative duties of the Office of the Dean, greeting students, faculty, and other visitors in the Office and addressing questions and requests.
  • Supervise student workers.
  • Coordinate the School timetable, interdepartmental communications, and an all-school calendar, and schedule academic program reviews.
  • Coordinate daily office activities, including managing interdepartmental communications, managing the copier room, and ordering office supplies.
  • Organize and maintain the School's digital archives and documents, ensuring the preservation and confidentiality of student, faculty, and staff files. Archive documents and be responsible for their retrieval when required.
  • Assist the Dean in supporting submission of materials for faculty evaluation and promotion processes including appointments, reappointments, promotion, and tenure in accordance with applicable policies and with the faculty union collective bargaining agreement.
  • Provide organizational support for School-wide events, including coordinating publicity, room scheduling, registration, catering, reservations for outside speakers, refreshments, helping with onsite logistics, and keeping accurate records of each event.
  • Route documents, obtain signatures, and submit documents.
  • Assist in School communications and outreach through such tasks as collection of content for School newsletters, web content, social media outlets, as well as other engagement activities.
  • Support searches run by the Dean's Office by maintaining records, making travel and other arrangements, scheduling and making room reservations for campus visits, and corresponding with candidates.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications


Education: Bachelor's Degree required.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of administrative experience in non-profit administration, higher education or a related field. Experience working in higher education administration is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: The successful candidate must have strong technology skills and the ability to use social media and digital tools to accomplish work objectives. Knowledge of Excel and Google Suite is a must. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to communicate effectively with faculty and administration to achieve school goals in a collegial manner while exercising discretion when necessary. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
