Diabetes has become an epidemic and the rate of diabetes incidence is continually rising. It was estimated in the year 2006 that about 21 million Americans had diabetes with an incidence increasing rate of 14% and that about 41 million Americans were pre-diabetic. In 2002, the cost of diabetes to the United States was $132 billion. Diabetes is mainly managed by the patient; a large amount of knowledge including clinical, technical and data interpretation skills must be acquired in order for the patient to successfully self-manage diabetes.
