FROM THE OBAMA HEALTHCARE ADVOCACY TEAM (486 hits)

Upon consideration of the critical state of the American economy, it seems only befitting to select Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as the next Health and Human Services Secretary of the U.S. President Obama has remained committed to over-hauling a failed American healthcare system. Under that policy, the average family will save $2,500 annually in healthcare costs! Currently, the U.S. healthcare system has weighed down our economy and conscience long enough so that healthcare reform just cannot wait and will not wait another year!

Healthcare reform is beyond repair in the U.S as it stands now and it has become imperative for the sake of our country’s future to select a leader who will focus on our economy, our families, and our future. That individual is Kathleen Sebelius.

Kathleen Sebelius is the strongest candidate for the position bringing with her a solid reputation to meet healthcare reform’s challenge. Healthcare is indeed an emotional issue in America because of its impact on the economy. The poor cannot afford quality healthcare and the wealthy do not pay their fair share of expenses such as for prescriptions although they earn in excess of $150,000 yearly.

According to data compiled by a leading progressive advocacy organization known as Families USA, 1 out of 3 Americans under the age of 65 were without healthcare insurance in 2007 and 2008. Approximately 46 million Americans lack health insurance altogether! For individuals like me who live with a brain disorder and need maintenance medications, this is frightening. It is frightening because I have economical restraints by Medicare that will put me into a doughnut hole just a few short months into a calendar year. While in this ‘hole,’ I must find alternative ways to purchase my medications or do without. This results in an increased risk for the onset of a health condition that only increases other medical issues that I cannot afford to treat. It becomes a vicious cycle that drains the American economy. On the other side of the spectrum, with the current economical disaster in our healthcare industry, America can expect approximately 1.5 million Americans to be forced into bankruptcy by year’s end. This will devastate the fabric of America.

Kathleen Sebelius is a 2-term Democratic governor and former state insurance commissioner. She has already overseen the Kansas Medicaid program successfully and has a well-deserved reputation as a bipartisan leader. As such, Ms. Sebelius is the likely choice to carry the healthcare reform ball for the Obama Administration.

Another vital reason that Kathleen should be the front end, is that her proven record on women’s rights will positively affect the value of family in America. While Ms. Sebelius is all for women’s rights, her stance could unnecessarily dominate her confirmation and overshadow the necessity for adequate healthcare funding and a nationalized healthcare reform – according to Republicans Brownback and Robberts who expect to have several differences of opinion with the Obama Administration with no mention of the abortion issue. As a woman, it is important to maintain the right of each and every woman to choose. It is not a matter of debate on the pro’s and con’s of life, but the mere ability to make a choice. Ms. Sebelius understands that basic right and represents protection of that right. That type of compassion is needed at the top.

Kathleen is not alone in her strong stance on women’s rights and it is necessary to have a woman over-seeing the preservation of that right as it will trickle down to every woman in every income bracket. It is admirable that Kathleen again has the strong respect and support of Republicans such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jon Huntsman as opposed to the GOP leaders: Brownback and Roberts. Kathleen has made it perfectly clear her opposition to late-term abortions. Knowing my child survived birth at 24 weeks’ gestation puts it all in perspective on how important this is. While this belief in a woman’s right to choose may ignite sparks, Kathleen has a demonstrated and able experience record to be very successful as the most appropriate leader of the U.S. healthcare reform.

Of course, healthcare reform will most assuredly redefine our future. We are on a collision path with fate in terms of a broken healthcare system. Individuals cannot afford to be unhealthy on even the smallest measure over a period of time. Loss of jobs and homes also equals an increase in sicknesses such as depression, hypertension, etc. We cannot successfully work jobs and the lack of employed persons affect unemployment benefits, social security, community viability, and family stability. These lead us to failure in the global market.

President Obama’s selection of Kathleen Sebelius is a wise one for the economy, the U.S. families, and for the future. It is imperative that Kathleen Sebelius secure her nomination quickly and we can support that process by contacting our Congresspersons and Legislators now and urge them to expedite Kathleen Sebelius’ nomination. Ms. Sebelius represents knowledge, background, and compassion for that position. We must think futuristic long-term outcomes because the short-term fixes of the past created the current fiscal imperative existing today.
