Pull down the curtains, wash the windows, sweep up all the dust bunnies...these are the common chores associated with spring cleaning but it is also a good time to do a cleaning in an area most people skip for years...the bathroom medicine cabinet.
Now that I have your attention...let me tell you something most people do not know...the bathroom is not the best place to store medications. The exposure to heat and humidity can greatly affect the shelf life and effectiveness of many medications. The best place to store medications is in a cool, dark place such as a hall closet in a covered container on a top shelf.
You should check all medication for expiration dates. Medications that have been stored properly have been shown to be effective for at least a year past that date. If you have been storing them in the bathroom it is advisable to discard any pass the expiration date because out dated medication can loss their effectiveness and/or deteriorate which can make them potentially harmful if taken. When in doubt...throw out. Certain medications should not be used pass the expiration date in any circumstance...these include nitroglycerine, liquid antibiotics, insulin and eye/ear drops.
Medications should be discarded properly and should NEVER BE FLUSHED DOWN THE DRAIN OR TOLIET!!! To discard pills crush them and mixed with coffe grounds or kitty litter and place in a plastic sealed bag. Liquid medications can be mixed with water to dilute and also placed in a sealed plastic bag. Check with your local pharmacy to see if they will accept your expired medication for disposal at a certified hazardous collection center for proper disposal.
The other item to include in your springtime ritual is the first aid kit...be sure to replenish it with a supply of bandages, gauze, medical tape, antiseptic ointments, cleaning solution, eye wash, tweezers and a thermometer.
