Black History Daily: Who was named the most influential woman of the 20th century? (1988 hits)

Our HBCU Queen - Oprah Winfrey (born on January 29, 1954) is an American entrepreneur, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist, best known for her self-titled, multi-award winning talk show “The Oprah Show”, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist in American history, and was for a time the world's only black billionaire. She won an oratory contest, which secured her full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a historically black institution, where she studied communication.
Winfrey was in a position to negotiate ownership of “The Oprah Show” and start her own production company “Harpo Productions” because of the success and the amount of revenue the show generated. At age 41, Winfrey had a net worth of $340 million. Winfrey has remained the only African American to rank among America's 400 richest people nearly every year since 1995. At the end of the 20th century “Life Magazine” listed Winfrey as both the most influential woman and the most influential black person of her generation.
On January 15, 2008, Winfrey and Discovery Communications announced plans to change Discovery Health Channel into a new channel called “OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network”. The Network launched on January 1, 2011.
