FOOD FOR THOUGHT: SHOULD THE WAR ON DRUGS BE ENDED? (1389 hits)
In her best-selling book, "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness," Michelle Alexander argues that the nation's trillion-dollar "War on Drugs" and "tough on crime" political rhetoric have resulted in mass incarceration that, coupled with race-based policing, has disproportionately affected minorities, especially black men. Most are imprisoned on non-violent drug charges, and the bulk of those are marijuana violations.
In New Orleans, one out of every 14 black men is behind bars; one in seven is either in prison, on parole or on probation.
