The entertainer, 80, will receive the American humor prize and will be saluted at a star-studded gala on Oct. 20.
Carol Burnett has been making people laugh for decades.
And now the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced they will present the beloved 80-year-old entertainer with the 16th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
The prize is given annually to honor one of the world's greatest humorists, and Burnett certainly fits that bill.The comedienne, actress and author will be saluted at a special gala performance in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Oct. 20, which will feature some of the biggest names in comedy. It will be taped for broadcast and air nationwide on Oct. 30 on PBS (check local listings).
Upon learning she will receive the Mark Twain Prize, Burnett remarked, "I can't believe I'm getting a humor prize from the Kennedy Center. It's almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington."
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.
Previous recipients include Ellen DeGeneres, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg.
