HOW EDWARD M. KENNEDY INSTITUTE DISCUSSES, ART, MONEY & POLITICS FOR SCHOOLS! (3636 hits)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM THE EDWARD M. KENNEDY INSTITUTE!

Greetings from Columbia Point.

The Institute is wrapping up a school year during which 17,000 students came through our doors, and is now preparing for a busy summer with new programs and exhibits for the public.

During the summer, we see people not just from Massachusetts, but from across the country and all over the world who come to Boston and enter our Senate Chamber to learn about our democracy.

They come with different backgrounds, languages, and political beliefs, but together have fun debating, negotiating, and voting on real bills pending before the U.S. Senate. They must consider all the complicated elements that go into creating a piece of legislation, and understand the factors driving the priorities for their “colleagues” from across the aisle.

Visitors leave our museum with a greater understanding about how people can and must work together to create change within their communities, and gain an appreciation for why democracy is at its strongest when everyone participates in it.

In June and July, the Institute’s Senate will be considering two different bills that would affect marijuana sales regulations and mandatory minimums for court sentences. Be sure to stop by soon, cast your vote, and let your voice be heard.

Best,
Dr. Jean F. MacCormack
President, Edward M. Kennedy Institute

THIS SCHOOL YEAR
THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH AND THE NATION VISITED

In the 2016-17 school year, the Institute hosted 17,000 students from 256 schools. Elected officials from across Massachusetts joined students from their districts to speak about public service and civic engagement. Students debated bills on the PATRIOT Act, as well as Immigration and Health Care Reform, and dipped into the past to debate legislation on Reconstruction and the Compromise of 1850.

"We really work on perspective taking and on trying to understand different viewpoints in class. And to see this in action and have it all laid out in a simple, fun, engaging manner is great. The people leading the sessions were amazing and left the students excited.” - JON POHORILAK, Stoneham High School teacher
