Former Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Dee Miller is no stranger to pain, from broken bones to career-ending knee injuries to years of treatment for sciatica problems. Trips to a chiropractor to ease worsening back pain led to a surprising discovery: his right hip was “a mess.” He wore shoe lifts and tried various over-the-counter pain relievers. Traveling for work or with family — either flying or driving — was miserable. But debilitating pain during an outing with friends to local high school football game changed his life: Mike Doss, another former Buckeye football player, set him on a better path.

“You need to call Dr. Beal,” Doss said.

Matthew Beal, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center who specializes in hip and knee replacements.

Helping active patients enjoy life

When Dr. Beal began his joint replacement practice more than 15 years ago, his patients were “almost exclusively over age 65.” He and his colleagues are now seeing a growing trend of younger patients interested in joint replacements. Many have arthritis. Others have had developmental issues since childhood or have lingering damage from accidents. More important than age is the patient’s desire to keep active and reduce — or eliminate — pain.
